Election Commission of India | Election Results 2009
Election Results 2009 - The Congress is set to capture power in Maharashtra for a third consecutive term and sweep Arunachal Pradesh while a not-so-good performance in Haryana left it as the single largest party scrambling for numbers to get a majority.
The Congress, along with its ally NCP, was poised to form the government in Maharashtra as it won in 101 constituencies and leading in 42 seats in the 288-member Assembly.
The alliance, which had won 140 seats in the last elections, may end up with almost the same figure and may not have problems in forming the government with the support of rebels of both the parties and independents.
Congress has bagged 57 seats and was leading in 23 others, while the NCP has won 44 and was ahead in 19 others.
Affected vastly by the presence of Raj Thackeray-led MNS, the Shiv Sena-BJP combine has managed to win 65 seats. Shiv Sena won 31 seats and was ahead in 14 seats, while BJP bagged 34 seats and was leading in 13 seats.
Results in Haryana came as a bit of surprise for the Congress which advanced polls by over seven months to cash in on its spectacular Lok Sabha election performance in which it had won 9 of the 10 seats.
The party was set to return to power in Haryana but with reduced numbers this time as the party bagged 39 seats and was leading in 1, according to trends of the 90 seats.
The opposition INLD led by former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has bagged 30 seats, showing a vast improvement in its performance of just nine seats five years back and one seat in the May Lok Sabha polls.
Three Independents Sukhbir Singh, Sultan Singh and Prahlad Singh won the Gurgaon, Pundri and Fatehabad assembly seats defeating nearest Congress rivals. Independents were leading in nine other constituencies.
The BJP, which parted company with INLD before the elections, received a drubbing at the polls as it won only four constituencies even though it contested all the 90 seats.
HJC-BL formed by former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal's son Kuldeep Bishnoi after parting ways with the Congress also failed to make any big impact as it won only six.
